Our Story

The COVER Workshop is based in Rome and has been working since 1989 in the field of book and document restoration throughout Italy. The workshop specializes in the conservation and restoration of ancient books, manuscripts, archival documents, and works of art on paper, collaborating with Italian state Libraries and Archives.

The family’s book restoration activity began after the Florence Flood of 1966, when Raimondo Milio, a bookbinder, introduced conservation restoration techniques for paper and parchment materials, starting a professional tradition that has been passed down over time.

The experience gained was further consolidated by Guido Milio, founder of the COVER Workshop, who structured the activity according to recognized methodological criteria, adopting techniques and materials in conformity with the standards of the Central Institute for Restoration and the Conservation of Archival and Library Heritage. The workshop carries out manual traditional restoration interventions as well as mechanical ones (leaf casting), respecting the principles of minimal invasiveness, reversibility, and compatibility of materials.

The work continues with the third generation, represented by Simone Milio, ensuring operational continuity, technical-scientific updating, and high specialization in book restoration in Rome and throughout Italy.
