The COVER Laboratory, based in Rome and working throughout Italy, offers its services to State Libraries, Archives, public and ecclesiastical institutions, and private clients. Every intervention is preceded by a careful assessment of the conservation condition to determine the most appropriate course of action, in accordance with the principles of minimal intervention, reversibility, and material compatibility.

Preventive Conservation

  • Analysis and monitoring of temperature and humidity conditions in storage, archive, and exhibition spaces;

  • Safety measures and stabilization of artifacts;

  • Dust removal and cleaning to prevent deterioration.

Assessment, Planning & Condition reports

  • Evaluation of the state of conservation;

  • Preparation of technical documentation and intervention planning;

  • Compilation of detailed condition reports.

Manual Restoration

  • Traditional manual restoration;

  • Interventions aimed at stabilizing supports, recovering legibility, and safeguarding the object over the long term.

Mechanical Restoration (Leafcasting)

  • Treatments to fill lacks and consolidate paper supports using leafcasting technology, particularly suitable in cases of extensive damage or insect infestation.

Professional Bookbinding

  • Creation and restoration of historical and archival bindings, leather and parchment covers, custom-made boxes and containers, using traditional techniques and materials compatible with long-term preservation.

Our Historic Workshop

The COVER workshop covers over 300 m² dedicated to conservation restoration, bookbinding, and preventive care of library and archival heritage. The facility is equipped with specialized tools and instruments for analyzing, treating, and safeguarding materials, enabling controlled interventions on paper and parchment artifacts according to compatibility, reversibility, and minimal intervention standards. Workspaces are organized to ensure environmental control and proper technical procedures from initial diagnostics to final documentation.
